Construction 4- Camera shots and lighting

After filming the first storyline of the opening sequence we decided to keep some shots in the other storyline however, they needed to be re-shot as they were either out of focus or not steady. We had to record the tracking shot in the opening sequence twice as the first time it was too shaky and affected the sequence.

Additionally, the lighting in most of the shots wasn't right as it was either too dark or too light. We filmed the sequence in the day instead of night because it was easier to get everyone together and it allowed us to have more time to film.

We needed to include more close ups and use a wider range of shots to attract the audience and make them want to continue watching the sequence as it makes the sequence more interesting and keeps it flowing.

Construction 3- Changing titles

A piece of feedback we got was to change the font of our titles and to change the colour of our titles. The top font was the original font we used because we thought it would define our genre but instead it showed the different type of horror such as a monster type horror where as ours is a slasher with a serial killer. We then changed our titles to the second font as it was bold and simple which highlights the type of horror film we were making.

Construction 1- Filming again

After filming the first storyline over 4 hours, we decided to change the storyline of our opening sequence and shoot again. This was because our first opening sequence didn't fit our genre and most of the shots were shaky, the lighting wasn't right and it didn't include twist or jump scares what is needed in a horror.

We decided to get rid of the original storyline and opening sequence, and change the entire storyline making sure it included jump scares and different shots and also include editing to make to film fit the horror genre.

The filming of the second storyline took just under 3 hours and included more jumps cares and twists to suit our genre more and make the audience understand the storyline and our genre.

Sandman Studios Ident

Sandman Studios Final Ident

For our opening sequence we decided to use the ' Sandman Studios' Ident as it related more to our genre of film and our target audience. It consists of a sandman like character rising from the ground and then filling the glass letters with sand to highlight the word 'Sandman', the studios is also in a gold coloured font to relate to the colour of the sand.

Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

What is the demographic of your audience?

Our opening sequence is targeted to 18 to 24 year olds as the characters in the sequence are roughly that age and it is more suitable for older ages as we made our storyline relevant to the target audience. The genders our film targets is both male and female as it includes mixed gender characters highlighting that it is suitable for both genders. The film also targets people in the UK as the opening sequence is located in London, UK making it target the UK audience. The ethnicity our film illustrates is diverse as we include mixed ethnicity characters. Our opening sequence targets people mainly who went to college as they was involved in education but still anyone who didn't attend college or higher education would still be able to watch this film. Finally, this film targets low to middle class people as high class people wouldn't appreciate the storyline where as low and middle class people would understand the plot, storyline and the sequence in general. This film targets people who prefer horror films as it is made to make the audience feel uncomfortable and scared as it is a slasher horror film.

What is the psychographic of your audience?

The lifestyle of our target audience would be laid back, relaxed and comfortable with most things as our product focuses on making them uncomfortable and we want to change how they are when they are watching our film so they enjoy the film and understand our storyline, plot and sequence. Additionally, our audience would be interested in Netflix and youtube as it shows they enjoy watching different things.

 Other information about our audience?

Our target audience would watch TV programmes such as American Horror Story and Scream as it would show they enjoy horror, they would also enjoy going out to the cinema as they are intrigued by new films and want to watch new movies all the time. The dress code is casual as the film consists of characters wearing casual clothing making it seem more realistic.

                                                                                                                     Why the horror genre?

We chose a horror film because people enjoy getting scared and seeing different types of horror film as they want to see if they can get scared by what happens in the film, this film makes people sit on the edge of their chairs and makes them wonder what is about to happen.

I then took this information to create a visual 'profile' of our ideal target audience member:

Question 3 - What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our production company ' Sandman Studios' is the company we have created and decided to choose to support our opening sequence. It portrays a sandman rising from the ground with the sand filling up the glass letters highlighting the word 'Sandman' focusing on the company. The dark colours and bold font indicate the type of films our company distributes as it indicates horror films. The sandman can be seen as a mutant and therefore could be scary to certain people.

A film distributor is often an independent company, who takes care of the distribution and marketing of a film on DVDs and movies. They also decide on how to distribute the film after the film release such as DVDS and blue-rays, online streaming and Tv. Our distribution company is called 'Lionsgate'. We decided to use Lionsgate because there films are targeting the same target audience as our film and the colours used in the horror ident. The films that lionsgate has already distributed that our film can relate to are You're Next, The Quite Ones and Cabin in the woods.

I believe BFI film should fund our horror film as their aim is to Encourage the development of the arts of film, television and the moving image throughout the United Kingdom, meaning that our film would be perfect for them as it will help them achieve their aim. They will also help out our company and improve our popularity as they are a large company and they will support us. Additionally, our film would be of a small budget as we are an inexperienced/ unknown company that are aiming to develop in media.

A place for screening our small indie horror film is the BFI Southbank in London. This cinema is a small eye-catching place that uses it based in a well known location, a bar and incredible programme of films and events to always interesting cinema fanatics. This is a great place to screen for us as a company. Also, it would attract a wide audience to come to the screening as the southbank is a smart and attractive place.

Final Sequence

Construction 2- Change in location

At the beginning, we planned to film at mica's house but in the end we decided to film at my house as the layout of my house related to our storyline making it easier to film as at Mica's it would have meant that we would need to change the whole storyline. Additionally by filming at my house it saved time as my house is just down the road giving us more time to film. The layout of my house allowed us to film more adventurous shots and was ideal for our storyline of our opening sequence.

Question 1 - How does your media product support, develop or challenge the conventions of other media texts?

New Location and Storyline

We decided to change the location of our opening sequence from Mica's house to My house because it had the right lay out for our new storyline.

The storyline was originally about a group of teenagers having a party with a serial killer trying to get into the house and try to kill the teenagers at the party, but the storyline didn't exactly show horror and therefore we changed the storyline to teenagers sitting at home with a serial killer trying to kill them however this storyline included more jump scares, clues about where the serial killer is and different types of lighting, camera shots and sounds to make the opening sequence seem more like a horror.

Font for title- Black Asylum

As a group we decided to use the font 'Black Asylum' for our title of our opening sequence project. This is because this font best suits our opening sequence as it is bold and creates a sense of fear and makes the audience feel uncomfortable which is what our opening is all about. This font is also sharp highlighting the sub genre of our film which is a slasher, due to the style of the font it fits in with our genre which is horror. Additionally, this font suits our target audience ( females and males under the age of 25) as it portrays the genre horror and indicates that the film is going to be eerie and unsettling through the style of the font where as if this film was addressed to children the style/type of the font would be suitable for them.

Title Fonts

I chose these different fonts as they are bold and dark colored which relates to the theme of horror. The top font indicates blood as the dripping affect of the font symbolizes the dripping of blood indicating that blood would be spilled in that film highlighting to the audience that it is a slasher.

The next font is bold and stands out making sure that the audience can read the title clearly making sure they understand the type of film they are about to watch.

Finally, the last font i have chosen suggests another thriller as the different size in the letters make the audience feel uncomfortable and as a bit of each letter is cut out is indicates the type of horror the audience is about to watch- Slasher.

Survey Results

We Created a survey in order to see what people most enjoy about our sub-genre, this includes things such as props, type of killers/ characters and location.

These are the results that have an impact of our film as they are what people like to see in horror films:

The results from this tell us that more people prefer supernatural horrors rather than slasher horrors.

The results from this question show that more people are scared of weapons rather than dolls and music box, which are often used in slasher films.

These results show that different people believe that different locations are scarier in a horror movie as there is an even amount between woods/forest and haunted house.

This graph shows that a majority of people believe that a clown is the scariest character in a horror movie.

In terms of characters a wide amount of people agreed that teenagers are the best characters for horror films.

From these results, we have decided to create a slasher horror opening sequence that targets a mixture of male and female teenagers. Additionally, our film will include a group of teenagers at a house with a serial killer going to kill off each person at the party one by one.

25 Word Pitch

Distribution Company- Lionsgate

The company we have chosen to distribute our film is Lionsgate. This is because it suits our target audience as the films that they distribute are mainly suited for teenagers/ adults, which relates to our target audience of male and female ages 18-25.

The horror films that they have distributed that are aimed at our target audience are:

- Saw
- American Psycho
- Teeth
- The Vatican Tapes
- The Grudge

Initial Posts

The sub genre of my film is a slasher, which typically involves a violent psychopath murdering several victims usually with a bladed weapon. In our film, there will be a group of teenagers that get killed off one by one by a psycho killer. This means we will probably use props and fake blood. Sometimes the killer wears a mask to cover up their identity and make people scared of them.

Our story line is going to consist of a group of teenagers at a house having a big party, but outside is a serial killer that is watching the party from outside the house. Then, each teenager start getting killed off one by one slowly decreasing the number of teenagers left in the party. The killer will be masked with a sharp weapon and wear all black to look scary to the teenagers.

The characters we are going to use are:

-a serial killer
-a group of teenagers
- a policeman who is clueless about what is going on.

Entourage

Who made the title design for Entourage?

Jason Doherty and Helen Greene were the creators of the title sequence to the film Entourage, which came out 2015. After leaving Create Advertising, Helen decided to launch her own motion graphics company and make it 100% female-owned. Jason joined Helen in the fall of 2010 after working with her a few years earlier while she lead up the graphics division at 'Create Advertising.' They found commonality on many creative levels and decided to work with each other in motion graphics.

Where did they acquire their ideas for the sequence?

As leaders of the project both designers Jason and Helen believed that it would be essential to originate back to the roots of the eighth series, so they used the identical track and similar style to present the credits and the way they were formatted. This was by capturing many of LA's iconographic signage, locations, establishments, and landmarks to present nearly thirty credits ,altering them so they pictured producers, designers and editors names instead of the actual sign.

What was their relationship with the director and film studio like?

Both graphic designers had to have feedback in the locations used to change to present the credits and wait for approval from different aspects and managers from the film studio. However, they were given much freedom by moth parties as they were able to travel into the depth of LA and expand/explore past the sunset strip.
